Minister of Interior wants motorcyclists with bikes of 60cc or more to have a driver’s licence

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sar Sokha wants motorcyclists with an engine power of 60 cc or more to have a driver’s licence to reduce traffic accidents.

He expressed such an intention in a ceremony of appointing and equipping the rank of General Commissioner of the National Police on the afternoon of August 28, 2023.

Sokha saw that traffic accidents are still a matter of great concern and that this is due to drivers driving at high speeds and disobeying traffic laws. As a major challenge, he wants stakeholders to work together to reduce the death toll to below 1,000 per year.

Based on the current situation around the driver’s licence issue in Cambodia, the current law requires that those who use vehicles with an engine power of 125 cc and above to have a driver’s licence. For vehicles under 125 cc, a driver’s licence is not required. However, Sokha instructed his officials to re-study the driver’s licence issue, requiring motorcyclists with 60 cc or more to have a driver’s licence in the future.
